A panel of NASA scientists explains recent efforts to prepare for lunch.CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (CAP) - Microwave ovens at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida began ticking down late this morning toward today's planned lunch as NASA employees prepared once again to eat at their desks while they work.
"All of our lunches are in good shape," said NASA Lunch Manager Barney Charles. "Except that thing Howie brought in that he said his wife cooked last night. We have no idea what that is.
"Regardless, though," added Charles, "we are go for lunch."
The traditional three-minute countdown was expected to culminate at 11:38am EDT with a number of hot meals, creating a variety of smells that most agreed would likely not mix well together and leave an overall unpleasant odor coming out of the cafeteria.
NASA's only impediment at this point might be the mystery employee who has somehow managed not only to pilfer at least six lunches from the refrigerator in the break room, but also heat and eat them without anyone else finding out.
"We think there may actually be more lunches affected," said NASA Lunch Procurement Clerk Alex Bailey, "but for some reason people are either embarassed or otherwise afraid to come forward. As such, the investigation is proceeding slowly."
Bailey said that following a successful lunch today, NASA engineers plan to take a closer look at the lunch process as a whole, hoping that eventually instead of just being "go for lunch," they can "go out for lunch."
"Barring that, we are seeking Congressional approval for a courier to retrieve meals from an external lunching facility and deliver those meals to the NASA premises, which would negate the additional electrical expenditure caused by increased microwave usage," said Bailey.
Officials also said that assuming no this time around, they plan on doing dinner at a reasonable hour as well.
