Mitt Romney Announces Plans To Run 10K In 2012

DURHAM, NH (CAP) - Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney today officially confirmed his plans to run a 10K in 2012, ending months of speculation that he would do so.
The announcement did not come as a surprise to most, given Romney's April formation of an exploratory committee, which took into consideration the health benefits of running, determined a training schedule, and looked at the impression conservative voters have of runners.
Romney outlined his strategy for the upcoming 10K at a press conference held on the University of New Hampshire's track.
"It's time to put America back on track for greatness," Romney said. "And I believe that running a 10K is the way to do that. Look at me; I am a good looking man, a born leader. These looks don't come easily; my hair is meticulously sculpted each day, my clothes pressed and laid out for me, all as a part of my own effort to create jobs and stimulate our economy.
"And now, I'm proud to do my part in creating even more jobs as I employ a team of personal trainers, a coach - and of course, a running stylist - in my quest to run a strong race in November of 2012," Romney added.
Romney followed his statement by laying out specific plans on how he intends to train for the race, which foods he plans to eat to maximize his workout, and what footwear he would be wearing. The presidential hopeful then showed off a new pair of grey sneakers, leading reporters to point out that Romney's shoes were the very same sneakers President Obama wears when jogging.
Romney, however, defended his choice of footwear. "These only look like the same shoes. President Obama's sneakers are white; these are very clearly a light shade of gray. They may appear white right now, but that's only because it's very sunny. They're gray. Really. They are not the same shoe at all."
Romney refused to take questions regarding the sneakers and campaign staff quickly put an end to the press conference, citing the presidential hopeful's need for his beauty rest.
Fellow GOP candidates were quick to offer criticism of Romney's plans to run. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) spoke with reporters outside of her campaign headquarters and expressed her concern about Romney's motivation.
"Scientists have shown that running is a very homosexual sport," Bachmann said. "Even the terminology surrounding it sounds gay: chafing, pounding, sweating. Have you seen the shorts they wear? Mitt Romney's decision to run is a prime example of the gay culture seeping in to the lives of average American citizens.
"I only hope Mr. Romney can run away from the gay," Bachmann concluded, prompting some to speculate that this will be her new campaign slogan.
CAP News also caught up with Newt Gingrich at a local Denny's, where he took time away from his Early Bird Special to speak with reporters. Gingrich accused Romney of showboating and suggested that his plan to run a 10K showed he is out of touch with the average voter.
"What's wrong with being soft and squishy?," said Gingrich as he licked syrup from his lips. "Americans may not be able to relate to my $500,000 credit card bill from Tiffany's, but when they look at me and see my dumpy physique, they know that I'm not just another Washington insider. I'm just like them."
Sarah Palin refrained from commenting on Romney's announcement, but was overheard asking a member of her staff, "What can ya shoot with a 10K?"
