Julia Roberts Signs On For Sequel, "Eat Sleep Poop"

HOLLYWOOD (CAP) - Hot on the heels of the success of her latest endeavor Eat Pray Love comes word that Julie Roberts has agreed to appear in the sequel to that box office hit, tentatively titled Eat Sleep Poop. Famed director Kevin Smith will helm the effort, which has already begun shooting and is scheduled for release in 2012.
"There's another side to this story that's begging to be told," said Smith. "For every disillusioned divorcee who's looking for something more, there's a dozen sedentary slobs who've already resigned themselves to the idea that life is nothing more than constantly climbing up a down escalator.
"There is a sense of empowerment in that struggle, and as a filmmaker I intend to find it, document it, and exploit it," added Smith. "Who needs Botox when we have Big Macs?"
In the sequel, Roberts reprises her role as Liz Gilbert, a newly re-married woman who turns to the internet to find true love upon realizing her Brazilian husband was merely using her as a meal ticket to America. After boarding a plane to go visit her internet lover (played by Mel Gibson), Gilbert complains that the man seated next to her (played by Dennis Franz) is too overweight and encroaching on her personal space.
When flight attendants kick the man off the plane, Gilbert comes to the realization that life is not about some holier-than-thou pilgrimage across Europe and the Far East, but rather the simple daily attempts to get from point A to point B unhindered. When attendants won't let her leave the flight to go apologize to the man, she activates the plane's emergency inflatable slide and takes off after him to set things right.
"Kevin [Smith] has always succeeded by taking chances others won't and casting Mel Gibson as the film's everyman is a beautiful blend of risk and self-assurance," said CAP News Entertainment Editor Greta Von Cistern. "The scene where Gibson's character calls Gilbert on the phone to express his disappointment that she blew him off is innovative in its poeticism."
The film marks Franz's first major role since NYPD Blue ended in 2005 and his first full rear nudity scene since that show's second season in 1994. He said he hopes the film can provide the boost his career so desperately needs.
"Let's just say my career isn't the only thing that's sagging," said Franz. "I do want to thank Kevin not only for the opportunity, but also for only shooting that scene from behind. Julia is a beautiful and marvelous woman, and if he had moved that camera just a little bit more toward the front, everyone would know I think that."
For her part, Roberts says she finds the film "very therapeutic" and much more grounded in reality than swatting at bugs while on location in Bali. She's already gained over ten pounds during filming, wolfing down a sleeve of Oreos in one scene and sprawled on a couch watching hours of mindless television in another. She said she has a new appreciation for how the other half lives.
"It's amazing how easy it is to just waste an entire day on Facebook," Roberts told CAP News. "At first I felt bad I wasn't being more productive, but then I was like, whatever, I gotta take care of these crops [on Farmville]. And trying to squeeze that in between episodes of The Bachelorette and 16 & Pregnant - I don't know how people do it."
CAP News did manage to reach Mel Gibson for comments about the movie, but due to decency statutes and our own civility, we're unable to reprint here anything he said.
