LONDON, England (CAP) - Fresh off a successful revamping and tour of his rock opera Quadrophenia, The Who's Pete Townshend has announced plans to update his old band's other signature epic, Tommy.

"I've always felt that Tommy should be pulled into the 21st century, given a new coat of musical paint, as it were," Townshend recently told CAP News. "I'm looking to make it fresh, beautiful, enchanting, like a child in a batht... uh, like an apple just picked, moist with dew."

The enduring tale of a deaf, dumb and blind boy with exceptional gaming skills will still revolve around a sense-hindered British lad, except his forte will no longer be a pinball game, but the '80s arcade classic Donkey Kong.

"It came to me during a colonoscopy, of all things," Townshend said. "Little snippets, you know? Like '...that deaf, dumb and blind kid sure jumps a mean barrel, da da dum dum da daaa.' Or '...it's an ape, Mrs. Walker, it's an ape!'

"Admittedly I was pretty heavily sedated at the time," Townshend added.

Townshend's only remaining band mate, Roger Daltrey, is surprisingly showing a lot of support for the idea.

"I'm not a big fan of some of the stuff Pete's done in the past with our material, which I think is pretty obvious by now," Daltrey said. "With Tommy though, I love it. The whole Donkey Kong angle is very cool, one that I think will make it much more accessible to the kids these days.

"And Keith (Moon) would have loved it," Daltrey added, referring to The Who's drummer, who died in 1978 of an overdose of alcohol withdrawal medication. "He passed a couple of years before Donkey Kong came out, but he used to love to get shitfaced and play Pong for hours, manning both paddles and doing all the sound effects himself and stuff. Ping! Ping! Ping! Scooore!"

Tommy: Donkey Kong Wizard is expected to make its stage debut sometime next summer.
