MASON COUNTY, Ky. (CAP) - Following Britney Spears' break-out performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, producers for the much-anticipated stage production of White Trash Musical have named the pop star to the lead female role. Spears will play opposite recently named male lead, Kid Rock.
"We are very excited to have Miss Spears on board for this show," said director Clive Burkhead. "When I seen her at the VMA's, I suddenly had a craving for fried chicken, and I knew we'd found our White Trash girl."
Spears will play 23-year-old Betty Anne Hutchins, a high school senior who learns she's pregnant, but doesn't know who the father is. Kid Rock plays 42-year-old Earl Boller, the latest of three love interests who just wants to earn enough money pumping gas so he can afford the paternity test.
Producers say a twist at the end involving Betty Anne's stepfather will leave audience members "reaching for the tissues."
"The chemistry between Britney and Kid Rock is nothing short of magical," said Kipper Pollack, editor of The Redneck Revewe. "When Britney is standing there barefoot on the porch and puts her hand on her little pot belly as she watches Kid Rock walk away - man, it'll give you goose bumps."
Pollack said that while the show does do a good job of entertaining, there is an underlying message for all teenage girls, regardless of how remotely related they may be to their first boyfriends.
"Commercially successful and knows who fathered which baby?" said Pollack. "Really, could we ask for a better role model for our girls than Britney Spears?"
The show opens next weekend at Pearl's Prod 'n Poke on Lees Creek Rd. in Dover, Ky. After two sold-out shows there, the cast embarks on a 16-town tour through the Midwest that spans the next three months.
