Joey tries out his new one-legged dance routine in preparation for the next episode of Dancing With The Stars.LOS ANGELES (CAP) - In a development that surprised fans and odds makers alike, former 'N Sync member Joey Fatone's leg flew off during this week's episode of Dancing with the Stars.
"Well, I didn't see that coming," said host Tom Bergeron, apparently speaking literally - the meaty limb hit him squarely in the side of his head, causing a minor concussion.
Media reports about the show had previously been focused on activist and ex-Mrs. Paul McCartney Heather Mills, whose prosthetic left leg has been the subject of almost slavish devotion by the show's publicists, at one point even appearing without Heather on Ellen.
"But it should have occurred to somebody that Joey might be the one to lose something during one of those routines," said Reality TV Magazine's Rick Shminkoff. "You know, besides his dignity."
Doctors have blamed the unexpected limb loss on a combination of factors, including Fatone's almost superhuman efforts to force his unwieldy body to do a quickstep, and the dangerous, sudden use of what judge Bruno Tonioli called his "George Michael moves."
"When that leg came flying off, it was hot, it was sexy - it was like Saturday Night of the Living Dead!" yelled a wildly gesticulating Tonioli in what linguists believe is an Italian accent. "He was like a wild bear in a giant blender!"
The incident sent shockwaves in gambling circles, where the odds of Mills' leg flying off had been determined at 4-1. But according to Sal Preminger of the gambling site Bodog.com, the odds of Fatone losing a limb were figured at almost 20-1, meaning a few lucky bettors will see a big payout. "The only bet we saw with worse odds was the chance that John Ratzenberger winds up sleeping with Edyta Sliwinska," said Preminger.
As for Fatone, he's being fitted for a prosthetic limb and plans to be back in the competition next week. "I figure if Heather can do it, so can I," said Fatone. "And I haven't pissed off millions of Beatles fans, so I figure that gives me a leg up.
"Leg up - get it?!" said Fatone, prompting Ian Ziering to bitch-slap him on his stump.
