DISEASE PREVENTION

What Vitamins Will Help Prevent Disease?

What Vitamins Will Help Prevent Disease?

Vitamins are not only good for your overall health but they can also help prevent disease. They can help fight against heart disease, lower your risk of cancer and boost your immune system. Always consult your doctor before taking any supplements.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A plays an important role in your vision and the lining of your eyes. It is also known as the anti-infective vitamin since it boosts the immune system by building white blood cells, needed to fight infections and prevent disease. Skin and mucous membranes rely on vitamin A to protect its barrier from bacteria and viruses. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, cell culture and animal studies published in the 1999 issue of Modern Nutrition in Health and Disease found that synthetic vitamin A can significantly reduce the risk of cancer of the lung, skin, breast, liver and colon but human studies are less clear. A deficiency in vitamin A leads to blindness, respiratory and infectious diseases.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 aids the body in the synthesis of neurotransmitters, needed for both mood stabilizing and nervous system function. It helps with red blood cell formation and is indirectly involved in transporting oxygen through the blood. Hormones depend on vitamin B6 for regulation and the amount of hormones in the body may affect the formation of breast and prostate cancer. A study published in the 1998 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, as reported by the Linus Pauling Institute, showed that women who consumed vitamin B6 in 4.6 mg doses daily reduced their risk of heart disease by 33 percent as compared to women who took only 1.1 mg of vitamin B6 daily.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12, along with vitamin B6 and folate, has a vital role in regulating homocysteine, a product that breaks down protein. Too much homocysteine in the blood increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. Vitamin B12 helps to recycle homocysteine into one of the body's building blocks that creates new protein. When there is not enough vitamin B12 in the body, homocysteine can not be broken down and it clogs the arteries. A deficiency in vitamin B12 can inhibit the proper use of folate, which can lead to an increased risk of cancer. Alzheimer's patients often have low levels of vitamin B12 and while this deficiency has been linked with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease, more research is needed.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an effective antioxidant hat can help prevent disease by fighting against free radicals. Free radicals can occur naturally through metabolism or from pollutants and toxins in the environment. Vitamin C boosts the immune system, helping to fight against bacteria and viruses. A study published in the 1993 issue of Nutrition Today noted that men and women who took a total of 300 mg per day of both dietary and supplemental vitamin C lowered their risk of death from heart disease by 42 percent and 25 percent respectively, according to the Linus Pauling Institute.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D maintains calcium metabolism, which is essential for bone health and preventing osteoporosis. It also regulates cell differentiation and proliferation, which is important because cells that grow rapidly out of control can mutate, leading to an increased risk of cancer. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, a study published in the 1999 issue of Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, found that vitamin D slowed the proliferation of cancerous cells in cell culture. Vitamin D receptors have been found in malignant tumors of the breast, bone, skin, colon and lung, indicating that vitamin D may help protect against and fight these types of cancers.
